Flood

Flooding is defined as the accumulation of water within a water body and the overflow of excess of water onto adjacent floodplain lands. The floodplain is the land adjoining the channel of a river, stream, ocean, lake, or other watercourse or water body that is susceptible to flooding. According to the Instituto de Hidrologoía, Metereología y Estudios Ambientales (IDEAM) in Colombia, at least nine of the country's 32 departments, which account for 28% of the country's territory, are exposed to flood hazard by the rainy season every year. This report revealed that 12% of the territory suffers periodic flooding and that this percentage reaches 28% in seasons in which rains increase.
